USA BIG CITY PICs

Located at the mouth of Hudson River, New York City became America’s main immigration entry point in the 18th century. The city was named the first capital of the United States in 1785. The first Congress met in Federal Hall on Wall Street and drafted the first Bill of Rights, as well as the Northwest Ordinance that same year.

The Northwest Ordinance was the first step in expanding the United States. George Washington was inaugurated in New York in 1789. A new street grid system was put in place in the early 1820s, which mapped all the streets on the island of Manhattan. The street grid divided the city in sections in order to accommodate the immigrants that were moving into the city in large numbers.

So, a friend of ours hooked up Mike, Warner, and I with tickets to the sneak preview of “Tron” tonight at a ginormous IMAX 3D on the Upper West Side. Before I knew anything about the movie, I was quick to write off the entire general concept of Tron as the nerdiest thing that I had ever heard of. Then, I had vivid flashbacks of being a little kid playing Tron (I think the original came out in 1983 and I have memories of throwing socks at other kids, weird right?). After that, I heard through the grapevine that the cinematographic landscape of Tron’s “alternative universe” was inspired by the physical landscape/layout of Burning Man, Jeff Bridges was the star, and Daft Punk produced the entire soundtrack.

New York City
’ve always thought of New York City as the perfect city for lovers. There’s so much to see and do, so many places to take romantic strolls, cute little candlelit restaurants. It’s pretty chilly in the city for Valentine’s Day most years, but that just means more time spent snuggling in a cozy New York City hotel for the weekend! These hotels are pretty posh, so they’re a good choice for a real splurge for maybe one night:

The Inn at Irving Place:

Rooms are still available for Valentine’s Day as of this writing, and a nice Queen room will cost you about $445 plus tax. But, you get to stay in one of New York City’s most beautiful bed & breakfasts. The beautiful townhouse dates from the 19th century, and it’s located just south of Gramercy Park. You can relax with an in-room massage and with a complimentary (yay!) breakfast in bed.

USA HOUSES WLLs

You've probably heard of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company ... their houses have been featured in Time, Domino, USA Today, and the New York Times, to name a few publications. The home pictured above is different from their other homes, which have that traditional, A-frame-esque shape. All Tumbleweed homes are sufficiently small, but this home is modern. It's 400 sf of green modern. The Z-Glass House is a stationary house, meant to be affixed to a foundation. You buy the plans and find a contractor to build it for you (with costs ranging in the $100 - $200 psf range). Or you can build it yourself. Check the layout, too. Such a great looking home, with a kitchen, bedroom, living room, and bathroom, what else do you need? Add a little solar on the roof, or maybe even a Skystream, and call it done.

SMART Cars Coming to America

By Hank Green

This year at the LA Auto Show, I, for the first time ever, sat down in a SMART car. These little guys are smart for a lot of reasons, most importantly because they are comfortable, small, and practical. There's far more leg room in a SMART car than there is in my Nissan Sentra, but the SMART car is almost half the size.

The sacrifice, of course, is the back seat. But in a world where every family already has one SUV...why not also have a little $10,000 car for single-person trips that otherwise would use a tremendous amount of gas?

And that's why SMART is officially going for the American market. They announced their planned invasion last year, and now they're taking reservations. It's looking like you're going to need a reservation, too, as supply will be limited and the demand (for the launch at least) is there. So, if you want one of your own, head to SmartUSA.com and reserve yourself a ForTwo for only $99.

Summerhouse by Turner Castle

In UK
summerhouse-01.jpg

Sometimes if you need a bit more room you don't need to move or do a big addition; perhaps a garden shed will fill the bill. Architect/Builder Turner Castle, in collaboration with Ullmayer Sylvester Architects, built this "summerhouse for a family with two small boys. The client needed additional space in his North London house, which was brimming at the seams with his expanding family. Rather than extend, they decided to build a summerhouse at the bottom of their very long garden. The idea was that this small building was to perform a hybrid function: combining art studio, playroom, tool shed and kitchen."...

Computer System Runs on Just 8 Watts

In solar

Eight watts. That's with processor and SDRAM running full tilt. Add the 8" LCD monitor at 12 Watts and a folding solar panel and you have a complete off-grid Linux puppy for £499. It was developed for the third world as "a collaborative, open source project of vast possibilities and a highly focused process to rapidly produce and distribute affordable computer appliances for people without reliable access to power. " That may be so, but it would work fine right here- my wall-warts suck more than 8 watts, let alone the computers. ...

Clevr: The Last Tea "Bag" You'll Ever Use

In tea infuser
tea-stick-chiasso.jpg
Reminscent of the Teastick (no spaces), the Tea Stick is a clever spring-loaded gadget perfect for brewing up a cup of tea without the muss and fuss of a pesky tea bag. Many tea aficionados will tell you that loose-leaf tea is the only way to go when brewing yourself; now you can do it in spring-loaded style and never have to bother with the waste of individually-wrapped tea bags. Sure, each tea bag doesn't contribute a huge amount of trash to the waste stream, but why do it if you don't have to? We aren't the only ones who liked the looks of this; it's available
